How to Use the Lesson Plans

Each lesson is split into learning objectives and can be taught in parts or as a whole. A 10/15 minute session including a game or song may be more than enough for some children while others are happy with 20/30 minute sessions.

Each lesson recaps on the last and helps to build on your child's previous learning experiences.

Read through the lesson plan first to ensure you know;

1) What the objectives are,

2) The tasks the lesson includes,

3) The resources you need, and

4) How to check your child ‘s learning experience against each of the learning objectives

Remember a badly organised lesson can leave your child confused rather than informed!

How to Run a Lesson

Is a very general statement of the overall goal of the lesson - the intention.

Learning Objectives

These are sometimes called 'learning outcomes' and state what the learner should be able to do by the end of the lesson as a result of the teaching and activities.  Learning objectives are based on three areas of learning: knowledge, skills and attitudes. There are three specific characteristic to learning objective:

A learning objective is often used more than once, to allow you to recap on elements previously taught, to check your child's understanding and highlight any misconceptions or gaps.  This then enables you to focus more effectively on the areas in which your child may need extra support.

The adult and child icon next to a black highlighted box shows key information to be covered with in the lesson.  

The eyes icon indicates that you need to help your child to focus and investigate a particular resource, before you can move on effectively to the next part of the lesson.

Question mark icon indicates that open style questions are to be asked. These can help to make it clear that you want to know what they think and are not expecting a specific answer. This will enable you to explore their understanding and reasoning which will help you to pick up on any misconceptions, as well as help them to take their current knowledge further.

It is important to remember to give your child some thinking time, they may know the answer but need a little time to pull it forward and work out how best to phrase it.

Some children may need a little encouragement and reassurance that you really do want to know what they think and it is not about a right or wrong answer.


Lists the resources you will need during the lesson


The green highlighted boxes indicate the main teaching and learning sections of the lesson. The icons help you to quickly see what type of teaching and learning approach is being used at different times in the lesson.

The mouth icon indicates that you need to explain an idea or concept to your child. A way of explaining the idea to your child is shown in speech marks and the actions or activities that accompany it are shown in square brackets [].

The weight lifting brain icon indicates activities specifically designed to support and develop your child's learning in relation to the learning objectives.

The lasso icon next to a purple highlighted box indicates how to finish the lesson. The short activities or questions are designed to help check your child's learning experience against each of the learning objectives, helping you to understand where your child may need extra support.

The green action icon next to the red highlighted box shows a list of games to be played after the lesson. They have been designed to focus on developing your child's knowledge and understanding of the learning objectives set in the lesson.

You do not have to play all the games but try to play a range of game styles to help engage and make it more fun for your child.
